WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
A common treatment for removing the small veins known as spider veins is a procedure known as Sclerotherapy. During this procedure, veins are injected with a sterile chemical called Sclerosant. This chemical irritates the lining of spider veins, thereby causing them to become inflamed and hardened. Once this occurs, these spider veins will fade away over time. This results in blood circulation being carried out through healthy veins located deeper in the tissues. A patient should notice an improved appearance and less pain in the legs after undergoing Sclerotherapy.
SCHLEROTHERAPY DOCTOR
Sclerotherapy, the gold standard of treatments for smaller unsightly veins, involves injecting veins with a safe painless solution that causes the body to collapse and then absorb the vein without harming the rest of your body. The treatment involves no significant limitations or downtime, and the patient may go immediately back to work following their appointment. Compression stockings are then used to make sure that the vein walls stay collapsed
Following the procedure, you may notice slight bruising or swelling which should go away within a couple of weeks and also pigmentation which could last up to a couple of months. Heat and aspirin are typically recommended to reduce the swelling and the lumps can be removed at a later office visit.
This procedure will remove unwanted veins but it will not prevent future veins from becoming a problem. Patients generally experience a 40 percent improvement in the appearance of spider veins after each sclerotherapy treatment. Depending on the patient’s condition and desired results, between two and six sclerotherapy sessions (each typically less than thirty minutes), spaced 4-6 weeks apart are needed to achieve optimum results.
HOW IT’S PERFORMED
Sclerotherapy is typically performed as outpatient treatment, and takes place in a physician’s office. During this procedure, we use ultra-fine needles in order to reduce the amount of pain that is felt during this procedure. After therapy, the veins that were injected will automatically spasm. They will eventually close themselves off permanently, and this process can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks to complete. During the healing process, patients are required to wear compression stockings. Wearing these stockings helps keep the affected veins empty, thereby minimizing blood clots from forming.
Some patients require more than one session to completely get rid of their spider veins. In most cases, anywhere from four to six sclerotherapy sessions are required to entirely eliminate their appearance. Whenever multiple sessions are needed, these should be spaced from two to four weeks apart for best results.During a sclerotherapy session, a physician may use a vein lite to help with the injections. This is because injections should be given into incompetent and feeder reticular veins. It is often difficult to see these particular vessels with the naked eye, so the use of a vein lite is therefore required.
